Q
After I stain my cane, how do I maintain it and keep it in good condition? i.e. oil etc. Which kind of wax/oil?
A
You should avoid putting cane or wicker in hot, dry, sunny rooms or next to heaters. Low humidity heat will dry out cane and make it brittle.
It should be oiled about once every 12 months with a mixture of one part linseed oil with 1 (or a little more) part turpentine.
First brush off any dirt with a firm vegetable brush and then apply a thin coat of the mixed oil. Using any type of sealer, such as lacquer or paint, is not recommended as it does not allow the cane to breath and naturally absorb moisture from the air.
Q
Is it necessary to wet rush before working with it?
A
Natural rush is soaked in hot tap water for 4-5 hours before it is ready to be used. It can also be laid on polythene and sprinkled with water and left to soak overnight. The thicker butt ends are cut off and used later for stuffing between the layers.
